St Michael’s& St George’s

We keep metaphysical freedom and material truth in the same room, and we do not trade one for the other.

Common prayer is not common belief. The law applies equally to everyone. The parish exists to attract servant leaders who will defend the first and practice the second.

What the law must not settle

Conscience, worship, the soul’s eccentricity. The church’s work is to protect that diversity — not to impose a dogma as though it were a fact of the street. Good manners are the shape freedom takes when it has to share a room.

What is actually there

The dragon is not a mood. Truth that can be tested, work that can be finished, a law that binds everyone the same way. The church will not support a counterfeit, a monopoly, or a lie because the lie is useful to a side.

A Yankee

Someone who follows this code and creed

People come to New York for many reasons and many choose to stay. In the 1600’s the Dutch called the new English speaking immigrants Yankees. It’s the original insult transformed into the name for people who call the greatest city in the world their home. Anyone can become a Yankee. Some were raised in an old Anglo-American, Yankee Protestant pattern of conduct. Some adopt it. Both become Yankees. In this tradition a metaphysical identity is coded in manners, and manners can be learned so deeply they become hard to separate from who a person seems to be.

If the pattern could not be learned, it would only be ancestry, and ancestry is not a church. Call the inheritance by its historical name if you need one. We use it as a discipline. There is no blood test at the door. There is a prayer book, and a way of behaving that does not embarrass the room.

High-effort culture

A Yankee keeps three interests

One athletic, one intellectual, one social. Each asks for practice. None of them is a brand. This is the culture that restrains spectacle without asking the state to do the restraining.

Athletic

Something that makes you tired for a reason. Rowing, walking the length of the island, squash, swimming. Effort, not an audience.

Intellectual

A book read slowly. A language. An argument you can lose. The mind kept in training the way the body is.

Social

A table where people are actually introduced. Singing in parts. Dancing that has steps. Company that is harder than a feed.

Keep a season card

On the wall

Yankee Church holds metaphysical freedom and material truth together. The work is how we maintain that hold through connections within a community, not as chains that limit our freedoms.
